From Old School CD’s to Music Download

What kind of music do you listen to? RNB, ballad, rock, pop or hip-hop? and saan mo ito pinapakinggan? Sa smartphone mo ba? Music download ala iTunes, ung sa sikat na Spotify or do you prefer to go old school like CDs? Here’s a bit of history of how music was shared and bought from way back to now.

Before the CD’s came out, there were the much older mediums in which music is recorded. Have you ever got one of these? Vinyl records, or simply vinyl. It is also known as a phonograph record (also known as a gramophone record, especially in British English, or record) is an analog sound storage medium in the form of a flat disc with an inscribed, modulated spiral groove. – Source: Wikipedia . Been curious about these way back pero mahirap na makakita neto or some what rare na specially ung player na gagamitin for these types. Mala collectors editon.

In the foreign scene, a lot of famous rappers have vinyl records of their albums like N.W.A, Nas, Run DMC and even 2Pac but with a little searching in the worldwide web, I found even Kendrick Lamar has a vinyl record under his name. How? Obviously the prowess of technology nowadays. So if you’re into these kinds of records, maybe there’s a copy out there of your fave rapper’s album circulating.

And comes the Compact Audio Cassette! also commonly called the cassette tape or simply tape or cassette, is an analog magnetic tape recording format for audio recording and playback. It was released by Philips in 1963. Source: Wikipedia .

Cassettes rock!

Eto ung bida ung lapis mo or ballpen para lang i-rewind ung tape without the player or kung accidental lumabas ung tape sa loob tapos kelangan mo sya i-rolyo uli. 90’s kid will surely understand.

Got caught.. in the system.. sistema.. sistema ng millenial shits.. f*ck no

Sino nga ba ang ka una unahang nagkaroon ng record in the Pinoy Hip-hop scene? It would be singer and stand-up comedian Dyords Javier and his record “Na Onseng Delight”, and Vincent Dafalong “Ispraken Delight”. 1st in the Philippines and in Asia according to Wikipedia. Not sure if these are in the form of vinyl records or in cassette

Personally, wala ko ni isang cassette tape ng isang Pinoy Hip-hop artist before but I bet there are tons of it and isang name na pedeng mong lapitan tungkol dito is Prince Panlilio. Know more of his hip-hop collection at the related post below

And then comes next sympre, Compact disc (CD). a digital optical discdata storage format that was co-developed by Philips and Sony and released in 1982. The format was originally developed to store and play only sound recordings (CD-DA) but was later adapted for storage of data (CD-ROM). Source: Wikipedia

Yung bawal mo pa sya magasgasan or ma scratch kungdi, wapak cd mo nyan men

It can be played with a cd player or if me cd-rom ung pc mo.

Tambayan namin ni mah nigga before. Punong puno to ng mga cd’s at iba pa (pirated sympre, or naka burn na for you my dear).

CD Collections from Dr. Dre, The Game, 50 Cent, G-Unit, DJ Arbie Won
From my 1st cd copy, Dr. Dre 2001, The Game “The Documentary”, 50 Cent’s Get Rich or Try Dying to DJ ARBIE WON’s United Freestyles V2.0, Artstrong’s It’s Meant To Be Like That! , Rapublic and much more!

And now, the digital age, music download ika nga. The digital transfer of music via the Internet into a device capable of decoding and playing it, such as a home computer, MP3 player or smartphone. Popular online music stores that sell downloadable singles and albums include the iTunes StoreAmazon MP3fairsharemusiceMusicGoogle PlayCD UniverseNokia Music StoreTuneTribeXbox Music and MyMusic.com.ng. (Wikipedia)

Matic na matic, internet lang katapat neto browse browse sa iTunes and shit, pay via credit card or debit card ata in seconds, BAM! nasa desktop pc mo na, smartphone etc. ready to listen agad, no brainer.

iTunes | Pinoy Hiphop Superstar | Anong laman ng “boom box” mo pre? “Di lang sa kanta ‘to marunong din ‘to pumalag..”
Spotify, Soundcloud

Meron din file sharing sites na direkta mo din sya pede idownload gamit lang ay links like Media Fire and ZippyShare or artist nowadays also utilize Soundcloud, Spotify wherein artists can upload their songs form it under a playlist and allows listeners to download them or stream them from the apps. Super fast pace eto and malawak ang audience na pedeng ma reach out since its obviously online, world wide web baby!

With the help of Facebook, Instagram, Twitter etc. artists can reach out from thousands to millions combined with these online platforms that can surely introduce their music to the world but nothing beats the old school though. Iba parin ung may physical copy for me with the CDs and all but times change and so do the music. Baka forward more to the future malay mo ung hip-hop songs na like mo direkta na sa utak ng tao ma dodownload and somehow mag pla playback nalang sya internally, ikaw lang nakakarinig = baliw kana.

90’s kiddo kaba and ngkaroon ka din ng mga cd’s and cassettes dati? pa burn burn ng songs sa cd or bibili sa quiapo or kahit saang kanto and bangketa or naabutan mo na ung digital age and mapapa sabi ka ng “WHAT ARE THOSE???” sabi ni Shuri sa old school sandals ni T’challa a.k.a Black Panther. Legit Misfitz

Way back in 1993 when it comes to rap groups Mastaplann & Death Threat were the ones who were dominating the Airwaves. In 1994 a Rap group that goes by the name of Legit Misfitz emerged and became a competition to those two group that came before them…

Spearheaded by Boom (of Kulay), Legit Mizfitz is composed of Dash & Jhego (former dancer of Boom), they’re known for their Masa/Party Type of rap. Their debut album “Sons of Fliphop” was released in 1994 with the tracks “Jabongga”, “Trapik” & “Air Tsinelas” which became instant hits… and marked another landmark in the history of local hip-hop/rap… The 1st Album went Gold selling 40,000 copies during that year and was nominated a couple of times for best rap album and single for Awit and Katha Awards from 1005 to 1996.

Two years after they released their sophomore album “Ekis Pinoy(Bahala Na Generation)” with “Lotto” & “Chamama” as singles that also became instant hits with live band element featuring some of the best including the Dawn guitarist Francis Brew and other great artists on this album.

1997 was the year when the “Balik Sa Lumang Eskwela” album was released, unfortunately, the album is not as successful compared to their previous albums but 1st featured its Posse track called Vibestation Vol.1 which was the trend of 10 min tracks for an All-Star track featuring Jhonny Krush of Masta Plann Jeff Tam of Chinese Mafia Marben of Metal GroupoBad Burn and Sun Valley Crew just to name a few.

Fast Forward to 2002..5 years since their last album. Legit Misfitz came back with a brand new album “100 Porsyento”. and with the track “Magasin” which is a revival of Eraserheads Hit song as the carrier single. Plus they guested artists from other camps. This album can be considered more focused than their previous ones. The Album tritle track “100 Porsyento” features Dash’s sister Famous actress iza Calzado before she entered showbiz

A year after Legit Misfitz’s last album they released a compilation entitled P-Noize under their own label Phunky Juan Ent. which features tracks from D-Coy, Lady Diane, Misteazas, Urban Flow, Jhego, and Legit Misfitz.

Eventually, the 2 rappers carried on with their own endeavors, Jhego released 2 solo albums with his Felix Bakat project, and Dash with his own projects, ESP and Beatmathics, and 2 Solo albums as well.

Dash also produced for other artists most recently with the IceOut compilation under his Beats of the Northstar Production. prior to these releases they ave done work doing Hypemen MCs in numerous clubs and hosted events as well. Dash entered Radion in 2004 with Magic 89.9 and in 2007 to 2020 with Wave 89.1 FM.

In 2019 they were awarded the 1st Calle Con 2019 Pinoy Hip-hop Hall of Fame awards along with Pinoy Rap King Andrew E, DJ M.O.D, Chinese Mafia, and Mike Swift just to name a few.

Now they’ve ventured into pushing their own indie label PHUNKY JUAN ENTERTAINMENT and have been working with unsigned and up-and-coming artists recently they part of a project under Def Jam Philippines “Recognized 2.0” with a track that Dash Produced and features Legit Misfiz, k247, Calvin de Leon, and the sensational Al James entitled “Atin Ang Gabi”

Random Interview with: Jay Flava

More on rock ang influence ko.

Nag asawa at nagka anak.

Solid.

Asha: Palagay mo ba mas mag stay ka for good? or Kung gagawa ka ng kanta with someone sino? Collaboration?

Asha: Kung mga mga pasasalamatan ka this is your time to give your shout outs

Jay Flava: Abra, Apekz, Franchize, Loonie, Ron Henley, Syke, Georgy porgy, Rekta sa Kalye, Baryo Berde lalo na sa aking pamankin na si AlJames, Mike Swift, Shanti dope Klumcee, The lowkey Ninjas, Tattoo project, Brownman revival, Statik girls, Ron DeVera
